Twitspace?

Posted in Uncategorized by christophersaad on the November 24, 2009

If a band makes a comment about Myspace during a live show, they’ve obviously been living under a rock.

Twitter is the new Myspace.

Twitter is important enough for artists these days that the record labels are highly encouraging their artists to use Twitter as an outlet of communication.  Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails inspired the move from Myspace to Twitter.

Reznor used his Twitter account to help raise $1 million for a fan in need of a heart transplant.  He also gave fans inside access to upcoming tour dates, projects, and his collaboration with other artists.

Now, many bands are following suit, using the most up to date and popular social networking site to connect with their fans online.  Band and touring information, record release promotions, and contests on Twitter have been among the different ways for artists to connect with their audience.

During their show, San Francisco band Moonalice recorded each song live as they performed.  They immediately digitized the songs and sent out a tweet with download link to each song.  Using Twitter, Moonalice was able to push 3,000 songs all by themselves.

Another success story is of an artist who used a well-known rapper’s name to push 14,000 downloads within two days.  Mack Maine’s mixtape, “This is Just a Mixtape,” contained a song that featured a snippet of Lil Wayne.

Moe Arora, a friend of Maine who works in the music business, used Twitter to promote the song, calling it a “Lil Wayne exclusive” in order to grab people’s attention.

“This way we can capture the most interest immediately,” Arora said on his blog “Making the Mogul.”   “But I was careful never to say it’s a Lil Wayne featuring Mack Maine – I just emphasized on the exclusive cameo from a well-known name.”

The tweet featured the download link for Maine’s song.  Arora also asked his Twitter network to re-tweet the message, and by that same night, the DJs were playing the song in the clubs.  Bloggers and hip-hop websites were also posting the download link.

Twitter will continue to be the go-to place for the “heightened connection” between artists and fans…in 140 characters or less.

However, musician Ben Kweller says that artists need to find more creative ways to use Twitter other than just promoting a show.

“Tweet like you mean it, or don’t tweet at all,” Kweller said in an in interview with “The Our Stage Blog.”

Nowadays, rather than hearing a band on stage say, “Be our friend on Myspace,” you will probably hear them say, “Follow us on Twitter!”

With over 195,000 tickets sold within a three-day period, C3 reportecd a gross income of $13.5 million for the Austin City Limits Music Festival 2009  on the Billboard Boxscore posted on November 14th. Please take note this does not take into account all the sponsorship money and beverages sold during the event, only ticket sales.  I wonder how much will be spent on reparing the grass?

Didja know?

Didja know…that Rober Rodriguez wrote the script for his new series of predator fiteen years ago? He claimed that the script was useless then because the technology wasn’t there yet. Predators will be shot in Austin and in other cities in Texas because  he wants to stay as far away from the machine-like studios in Hollywood as possible. The distance will allow for his style to fully breathe rather than having high chances of being warped and manipulated. The studios tend to just throw money at a project resulting in a much worse film… The film is being produced for 20th Century Fox. The budget for the film is 38 million and the studios are in favor of the petit budget. With the overhead being fairly low, Fox has a much better chance of making a profit.

The Belleville WOWfit

This weekend, I had been invited to go see the Belleville Outfit live at Momo’s right after the UT Football game. By the time I had reached the top of the stairs at Momo’s, I noticed how incredibly packed the venue was. There were over 400 hundred lovely Austinites in attendance and they were all dancing the night away. I had known two guys in the band as we were all freshmen together at Loyola University in New Orleans. The band has three front-men and a rhythm section (six total). They were probably the tightest band that I have seen from Austin, other than Grupo Fantasma. I was proud to know these guys because I truly feel that they accurately represent the Austin live music scene. If one were to ask whether or not the scene still has its soul, the answer could of been no, before the Belleville Outfit. The band traded off lead singers every other song. Fibi, the only girl in the band sang with a very southern and delicate doll type of voice. There was even a moment when Tony Pryce came up on stage and sang with them. I enjoyed the set very much and decided to invite Jonathan (the drummer) and his girlfriend Carly Wolf over to make some vegan pizzas. We had a great time as we all sat and watched Meggan Carney and Carly Wolf write some great songs together.

Jesse Plemons dating an Austin Gal!

Posted in Uncategorized by christophersaad on the November 23, 2009

Friday Night Lights, another success from the capital of Texas! During the Austin Film Festival, I went to see the premier of  “Baghdad, Texas” starring Ryan Bogus and in the Rollins Theater. In attendance was was FNL’s star Jesse Plemons with his singer/songwriter girlfriend Savannah Welch. Savannah is in a super group of lady singer-songwriters called the Trishas. They are touring throughout Texas opening for artists such as Randy Rogers and Reckless Kelly. Now Back to Friday Night Lights…the show has experienced some up and downs with NBC due to the writers guild confusion. They are currently on DirecTV and should be re-runned on NBC on a future date. Another cool Austin feature is the epic music by Explosions in the Sky. The FNL album is pretty much all of Explosions.

1. From West Texas – Explosions In The Sky
2. Your Hand in Mine – Explosions In The Sky (with strings)
3. Our Last Days as Children – Explosions In The Sky
4. Ugly Fact of Life, An – Explosions In The Sky
5. Home – Explosions In The Sky
6. Sonho Dourado – Daniel Lanois
7. To West Texas – Explosions In The Sky
8. Your Hand in Mine (Goodbye) – Explosions In The Sky
9. Inside It All Feels the Same – Explosions In The Sky
10. Do You Ever Feel Cursed – David Torn
11. Lonely Train – Explosions In The Sky
12. Segull – Bad Company
13. Sky Above, The Field Below, The – Explosions In The Sky/Brian Reitzell/Justin Stanley
14. Slow Dance, A – Explosions In The Sky

Got Questions for Mr. Efron?

Posted in Uncategorized by christophersaad on the November 23, 2009

The Entertainment Journalism Class at St. Edward’s will have the opportunity to take on the red carpet for the premier of “Mr. Orson Welles and Me” this Monday, November 30th. The last time a Disney super star stopped in Austin was the surprise visit of the Jonas Brothers for their film debut on March 1st of 2009. Zac Efron will take the lead, however, his film debut will more than likely add a mature brand to his acting endeavors. Zac stars in “Me and Orson Welles” with Clair Danes, Ben Chaplin, Christina Mckay and directed by Rick Linklater.

The Entertainment Journalism class will be running the red carpet on November 30th at the Paramount and our professor has asked us to come up with a list of questions to ask while the stars are walking down. I have included my list in the post, if you have any other questions that you think would be of substance, let me know!

1. What’s different about working on the big screen as oppose to theater?

2. Do you see this movie changing the direction of your career?

3. How did you prepare for this role?

4. Were you an Orson Welles fan before working on this project?

5. How is Me and Orson Welles, different from all the other projects you worked on?

6. Were there any risks for you when accepting this role?

7. How were you able to grow as an actor while shooting this film?
